Sorry if I wasn't very clear.

I was thinking you about what you said earlier that there wasn't any way to force the reread of already available documents from the backend.

However, and now I'm speculating, maybe there was a way to run this document reread from the command line in the linux OS that Joomla runs off of?

Hi, hmm, no experiences with command line. I think it is more easier to do a php script, e.g. using Joomla! methods - to read the files (JFile, JFolder), check if there exists in download folder and if not then to copy them - this will be filesystem and then the database system - to add the names of the files to play/preview input form.
