I can't get the PDFs to preview before downloading

Post by underwatercolours »

I have scoured your forum about this and still have not been able to make this work. I have one website where all the PDF files allow the user to look at them in the browser window before downloading. This one uses Phoca Download 3.1.2
http://216.172.183.78/~julzcom/index.ph ... a-category#

Now I'm working on a new site, but with the same settings I cannot get the PDF files to display before downloading. The only difference is the version of Phoca Download. This one uses Phoca Download 3.1.4 and your online demo does the same thing.
http://216.172.183.78/~everroofsupport/ ... r-warranty

Both are Joomla 3.8.1.

On the site that does not work I have these settings:

Should I go back to an older version of Phoca Download to make this work the way I want, or is there another way?

Please help! I've tried everything.

Hi,
Preview Settings
Display Preview Button - Yes
If you want to use Phoca Download Preview Button, you need to copy your files also to:
/phocadownloadpap/
folder and you need to setup the:
'file - preview' option in File: [Edit] view.

Kind regards,
Benno

I have things sorted with a folder structure. Does that folder structure have to match the phocadownload folder? Even now, nothing I do seems to work.

Hi,
If you mean the folder structure within the /phocadownload/ folder and within the /phocadownloadpap/ folder, no it can be quite different. However, I find it clearer if these structures are identical.

Kind regards,

Thanks Benno, but this didn't work at all. Nothing I do fixes this. I'm kind of at a loss.

Hi, the PDF preview normally works:

https://www.phoca.cz/joomla3demo/phoca- ... -documents

Options
- Display Preview Button: Yes

File edit:
- check if the path to the preview file is OK in edit mode of the file

Extension
- check if the "preview" file has right extension (pdf or images)

Template
- does your template override component output (Phoca Download category view output)?

Thanks Jan. I really appreciate your help. I was able to make it work when I added a link to the preview file by editing the file. Previously there was no preview file linked. We're getting closer, but this isn't quite what I meant. On my first demo site at http://216.172.183.78/~julzcom/index.ph ... a-category I don't have any preview files or buttons at all, yet every PDF displays in the browser window, rather than downloading. This is what I'm trying to accomplish. I don't understand why I could make it work in the older version, but not in this version. Is this possible?

Hi, hard to say, testing with latest version (Joomla!, Phoca Download) without any problem:

Maybe there is some limit or specific server settings

Hi, after Christine explained me what the exact problem, I hope now I understand, that your need is to display PDF instead of download when you click on download button. So in this case the download button feature needs to be customized directly in the code so it prevents from downloading (as the component is primarily the download component and the feature is to download in any case)

I appreciate all your support and hate to ask for more help, but if you can point me in the direction of what code to edit, I'll do it. I have added all the "preview" links, but that's not what my customer really wanted.
