What is the idea with categories when all files ends up in the same folder?

I want to be able to choose what files to display based on category.

To be able to view content of .pdf-files I use Easy Folder Listing but
all files are in the same folder. I want to choose to show from a specified
category of course.

Sorry, I don't understand. Why don't you create subfolders inside /phocdownload/ folder?

Of course I can do that, it works with a simple file lister module for each subfolder but...
when uploading from frontend I can only choose category but not folder.

Then I have to move all files in FZ to their folders.

I have to choose another solution. I will use "Simple File Upload" and "Easy Folder Listing" instead of Phoca Download. Those modules do exactly what I want. I store files in .images, easy accessible.
I use one upload module for each category I use, have only 4-5 of them.
