I have modified coupon.php (works as intended)
(... administrator/components/com_phocacart/libraries/phocacart/coupon/coupon.php)

Yes, only layout files can be overriden by template.

thanks for the clarification. I was already afraid that this is the case; but better to have it confirmed.

Does this mean, that I have to manually change every time an update is done?

Any possibility for a "Workaround" ?

Yes... It is 1 file, so where is the problem?

Luckily, Phoca Cart is not updated too often... (because it was programmed well from the beginning

)
