Yes, backup your CSS file ... I think there will be no change but by every update the original file will be copied ... so after it you can copy your file to the Phoca Gallery folder....
You can add the class into Joomla! CSS too, but the problem is, that the Joomla! CSS should be loaded as first and then Phoca Gallery CSS is loaded, so your class will be overridden...
