How to disable clicking parent menu item but not submenu

I want to disable some of parent top menu links with sub-menus, so that when I click at the root top nothing should happen until I navigate and click to its sub menus for specific action.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Hi, this is not done in template but in menu manager or in the module for the menu.

hi , i know this is a late reply but hopefully will help someone. To disable the top parent menu, create the menu of type external url and in the link field place a #. When you click on this parent menu now, it will reload itself to remain on the page that is is already displaying....Cheers!
