How to display download counter in frontend

is there a way to display download counter next to a file or in de file Details in frontend of Joomla? I'm using Joomla 2.5, template shape5 Vertex, editor JCE...
Ok, I tried everything but in file view there is no download counter only in backend statistics. In Download configurations Display downloads is set to Yes, stil no counter...
Any ideas?

This means that instead in Description or in the Backend Statistics, there's number of downloads right next to a file.
Is this a lot of work, how much would it cost, can I do something for you...

Hi, you just only set the variable to the output code in template, e.g.:

components/com_phocadownload/views/category/tmpl/ ...

but for now I didn't do such change so cannot give any exact advice there
