I'm so tired of Joomla Galleries I want to scream! Anyway it seems my needs are different than people writing galleries. I just installed Phoca and it seems like a great project but in digging around in it I'm not sure it's suited for what I want to do either so I'm going to ask about it's abilities right here.
This is what I want, can Phoca do it (or is it planned in the future)?
1. Nested Galleries. For some reason in the Joomla world we think that nobody would ever need a category in a category.
2. Ability to insert image into article without writing tags in text. Is it crazy that we have a CMS and we still have to hand edit tags?
3. Random Image block
4. Ability to upload a lot of images at once. If I can scp them and then grab the directory that would even be fine but when I tried it it only made three thumbnails and then gave me a blank page.
5. Image description below image
6. user added comments
7. Download link for full size image - I see the demo of the gallery wallpaper but I'm not sure how to get the download link to appear.
It seems that it can't do number #1 but I may not be organizing things right. I have 6000 images in gallery2 and there's no way I'm having them all in two levels of galleries. Number 4 seems like it would work in a round about way if bugs were fixed. I see a field for adding a description but I don't see any way of making the description show up. Number 7 seems to be possible but I just don't see it.
Please help me figure this out. Even if things aren't possible now but are in the works and the code is clean I'll help out to get what I want. I've been using g2image, gallery4joomla bridge and Gallery 2.1 in order to accomplish this. I really want to get away from bridges to other pieces of software for administration and customization reasons.
Thanks
Grant

1. There are categories and subcategories in new version but it is not released yet... there are still big problems with SEF
2. No, you must use a Phoca Gallery plugin, but the tags give you more possibilities...
3. planned as plugin and module too (we must stabilize the Phoca Gallery first because every Joomla RC comes with other behaviour)
4. You can upload images via FTP and then use the Multiple Add function
5. You can enable image description in image detail view (modal or standard popup box)
6. No comments
7. Yes, you can display download icon for downloadion the images in default settings or component parameters...
See default settings or component parameters in menu link (component parameters override the default settings)
Now we have problems with Subcategories because they don't work with Joomla SEF (confusing behaviour)
I hope I didn't forget anything...

1. No, Phoca Gallery
1. No, Phoca Gallery doesn't work with uploading. You can upload data via Media Mangager or via FTP ...
There can be two ways how to upload images and make galleries:
a) - uploading via form - for users, administrator, ... Phoca Gallery doesn't know it
b) - uploading via media manager and via FTP, for users which work in administration area... they have powerful function - Multiple Add - you upload your images via FTP with folder and subfolders (e.g. 1000 images) and click on Multiple Add function - Phoca Gallery automatically creates gallery with categories (folders), subcategories (subfolders) and images (thumbnails)...
Phoca Gallery's way is b). It is ready for creating galleries in administration area...

3. yes - https://www.phoca.cz/phocagallery/index. ... e=download

Thanks for the repli
Thanks for the replies. It looks like you're heading the way I want to go. I contribute to the project that I use but it takes a long time to settle on code I want to work on that has the same philosophy as mine. Phoca is GPL so that's good for me.
Theorical questions
With gallery2 bridge had g2image which gave me an icon on my Tinyedit window so I could graphically add an image. How hard would it be to do this for Phoca?
I'm just starting to look at the code. I was surprised at how little there is. So where do I post developer comments and ask code questions?

I'll see what I
I'll see what I can do about it then because it's really slick to just click an image button and just choose a photo in the popup window to insert.
I'm looking at the code now. I only have g2image 2 because I'm only using Gallery 2.1. The new one needs gallery 2.2 so I'm not sure of the code changes. I may nab the latest just to see what's different. Anyway I think the javascript can stay the same as it's just a Tinymce plugin that calls the g2Image php script when clicked.
The actual code consists of about 1500 Gallery2 specific lines of PHP. I'll check into it. I'll need to know how Phoca works so I may have questions.
The standard disclaimer of "I'll get to this when I have time" applies here.
