I am far from an expert, but I believe that the /phocadownloadap folder stores the preview, and the /phocadownload folder stores the actual file to download.
/documents/17-phoca-download-component/575-setting-folders on this site, about a third of the way has information on preview files.

sorry but i don't understand the answer.
my goal is, when we want to download anything, to check it is the right file so i wondered if it was possible to view - thumb or full size-the jpg (or pdf...) in the download area. perhaps i missed a checkbox...

I have a suggestion that might temporarily cover your issue.

Phoca Download creates a few different folders when it is created:
/user/public_download/phocadownload is where the actual files to be downloaded are supposed to be stored.
/user/public_download/phocadownloadap is where the preview files are supposed to be stored.
/user/public_download/images/phocadownload is where the icons and image files are supposed to be stored.

There is a list of boxes to enter in the Phoca Download File module that looks as follows:
Filename *__________________Select Filename
File - Play___________________Select Filename
File - Preview________________Select Filename
Icon________________________Select Icon
Specific Icon (1)______________Select Icon
Specific Icon (2)______________Select Icon
Image______________________Select Image

Filename * looks in /user/public_download/phocadownload for files.
This is where the actual file to be downloaded goes.

Image looks in /user/public_download/images/phocadownload for files.
If you upload either a second copy, preview or thumbnail into this folder, then select it with the Select Image button, and save it, it should add your thumbnail where you can see it.

I am sure there is a better answer using File - Preview, but this might get the job done until it is figured out. I am currently working on figuring out how to answer for File - Play and File - Preview, as I am working out a similiar issue. Currently, I can get the play and preview buttons to appear in category view, but not file view. If I figure it out, I will let you know as well.
