I am aware of that and that's how I attempted to do it. Could be that the particular test site that I was using is corrupt. Will try on a fresh install and see what happens. Then report back.
Addendum
Have noticed that some modules(after being Published) have caused the front page to go to
http://www.site.co.uk/en/?index.php. But I don't have the language plugin enabled on the site.
Confirmed
Was PEBKAC id-10-t error, the database was corrupt. The extension installed 'as sweet as a nut' on a fresh install. Works well

Using Joomla 1.7.0. Have Phoca Map Component and Plug-in installed. Have installed two times but still get the same error as follows:
500 - An error has occurred.
