[solved] Can't get the menu to show up...

Hi,
I'm currently experimenting with your menu system - so far I was using a more complex method to achieve a similar result. I find the concept simple and easy to understand, but I can't get the submenus I create to show up...
This is a 1.7 test site, it's on a local server that's not accessible from the outside (I'm just testing J1.7 for now), so unfortunately I can't give anyone access. Just to make sure I've made an attempt with one of your free templates, so this isn't a template problem as far as I can tell.
I've created a new HTML content with a picture and some text in it, then made a new menu item. It's affected to one of the root items of the only menu of that site, the "show sub-menu items" setting of that menu is set to yes, and the menu is affected to the "menu" position of the template I'm currently using. The normal menu sub-items do show just fine, but those made from your component don't.
I'm sure I must have missed something... Any idea what it might be?
Thanks.
Seb.
