Do we need to worry about entering anything here? I mean, if the filetype isn't listed in the Allowed File Types (Upload), then there isn't any danger of some virus/script being uploaded, right?

or am I reading into this wrong? Is there another purpose for this option?

Hi, admin can set that some file types cannot be uploaded. Then e.g. backend manager cannot upload it.

Yes, in fact we can say it is obsolete parameter - but e.g. by 1.5 in frontend uploading - you can set different parameters for different menu links (this can be done in 1.7 too with customization) so the parameter is still there
