Feature Request: Each category has a random access key

Post by whph »

Hi Jan,

Your gallery keeps getting better and better!!! Many thanks for your engagement!

I have a very important request for your gallery:

Each category should have its own randomly generated access key, which will form a part of the link to this category. This idea comes from the usage of Google's PICASA Web Albums.

This has one very important advantage: If I send a link to a category to a couple of friends they can easily access other categories (albums) by changing the CategoryID in the link.

What do you think? Is that feasible under JOOMLA! ?

Best regards,
Raphael

In Joomla! links are created by menu links, not by component's category :(

but if you see the categories, e.g. on demo site, every category has own number, so this can be changed too

https://www.phoca.cz/phocagallery/demo/i ... -modal-box
https://www.phoca.cz/phocagallery/demo/i ... -box-image

the same (without human nice url):
https://www.phoca.cz/phocagallery/demo/i ... ategory/23
https://www.phoca.cz/phocagallery/demo/i ... ategory/24

both types are working

Thanks for your reply, Jan.

I havn't expressed myself very clear - that's why I give an example:

On my site this shows a series of pictures:
http://new.mysite.net/index.php?option= ... 4&Itemid=6
with just changing the 4 into a 6 as follows
http://new.mysite.net/index.php?option= ... ry&id=6&Itemid=6
you get a different set of pictures... which I don't like!

That is why I thought something like this would prevent that:
http://new.mysite.net/index.php?option= ... t6yu#56+ws
of course the other link would have a different key
http://new.mysite.net/index.php?option= ... ki84<jk-34

In PICASA it looks as follows:
http://picasaweb.google.com/me/LatinAme ... Ic4H-s_hNw#

Maybe there is another way, which is not known to me...

Thanks Raphael

I don't see it that way. It is just another string of letters that together with the rest will be "translated" to a SEF link.

If GOOGLE is using this technique, it is state-of-the-art and an absolute MUST for your gallery...

I know you have a lot of other interesting features to implement, but please think about my suggestion again!

Many thanks! Raphael

Hi Jan,

I have seen that the links in phocagallery now contain the name of the category besides its ID-number. In this way users cannot simply manipulate a link by changing the ID-number to see a different category, because they don't know the corresponding name of the category.

So my feature request of a random access key is no longer needed. You found a much easier and better way to achieve the same. Please delete it from the feature request list and put this thread to SOLVED.

Many thanks for your continuous work for this gallery!

Best regards,
Raphael
