Phocathumbnail images missing

I'm not sure how long this has been going on, but I definitely need to get it sorted out. Many of the phocathumbnail images in my download directory are not appearing. It seems to be completely random categories that aren't working.

I have checked folder/file permissions, and they are ok. I haven't messed around with any settings for the last year or so, and all the images were appearing a couple months ago.
I noticed the issue when trying to add a new file to my site. When I went to search for the icon image, I could navigate all the way through the directory until I hit the folder where the image was stored. Then it just gave me a blank screen.
I can access all the images via ftp and download them, so they are there, and working.
Any idea what could be the issue?

I checked with Safari and Firefox and the images are ok. So, any idea WHY Chrome is being such a pain here?
