Problem with direct links / login

Hi
I am struggling with a solution to the following:
When I login normally all allocated files are showing as expected.
However, when I access a direct link file (e.g. www. sitename.com/index.php/component/users/?view=login&return=...) which sends me to the normal login page, when I log in no files are visible.
Am I missing something in the settings?
