WARNING: Updates overwrite styles!

Hi,

before you update PD make absolutely sure that you have convenient(!) backups of all styles you changed. The update will overwrite them without warning or question.

I spent several hours adapting the PD stylesheets to my website and now after an update, I can again spend several hours to find a suitable backup archive, unpack it, find the right files and restore them.

That is really bad!

-Stefan

Edit: Also the setting are all set to default, so now I have a pisspoor looking site in the primary access time and can decide if I want to have my visitors look at the mess and make a bad impression or take the site offline in the main access hours for repair...
Really, updates should never kill settings and styles!

Hi, did you uninstall and the install the component or did you make update immediately without uninstalling?

1) Install or Update is not managed by Phoca Download but by Joomla! extension manager.
2) if you have installed Phoca Download on your site by Joomla! extension manager and then you install new version then Joomla! extension manager discovers it and overwrite files on your server but it does not change any settings or options. Yes, you right, updates should never kill settings and styles. And this is how Phoca Download works:

- when you upgrade, nothing is changes in Options (this is the basic feature in Joomla! - It will nonsense to change options when upgrading - then any component will be useless )
- when you upgrade, new files override old files - So if you create own custom style: ABC.css, such is not included in basic Phoca Download package so it cannot be overwritten. So yes, to have always your style, you need to do changes in your customized CSS files not to the core files of extension. Core files need to be updated.

So, reall not sure what happened on your server:

- but while upgrading no options will be changed and no custom styles will be overwritten.

If the options were changed on your server when upgrading a component, I think, the best is to ask on Joomla! forum, if there is no problem in Joomla! extension manager - which installs components and cares about updates. But for now I really have no info, that in the extension manager is such problem. I am updating all kind of extensions since 2007 on my servers and really, the options never changed, really no idea what could be wrong there  :-( :-(
