exe and exe files that are zipped get corrupt on download

We have some .exe files on our website that when they are downloaded through phocadownload they get corrupted. We can download the file via FTP and we can go to the URL directly where that file is located and they works just fine but when they are on our website through phoca download, the files download but give error when you try to run them:

Hi, can you paste the screenshot of the error - which part of your server produces it. If this is not a php then I think, the server needs to be checked for limitation. Maybe try to ZIP the exe files too?

In Phoca Download, there is only one limit to check the file - mimetype but if it is enabled in Options, then the download happens between server and user's browser and Phoca Download then does not and cannot limit the communication between server and user's browser.

I had been working with the hosting company and even though I didn't suspect Phoca Download to be the issue I had to ask to see if there was something I was missing. The hosting company said they upgraded from PHP 5.3 to 5.4 and it fixed the issue but that doesn't quite make sense to me but the issue is resolved. I suspected it was a server limitation for security reasons.
