Jan,

I was wondering if it is possible to have more than one instance of phoca gallery installed on one website. I want to place pictures on the site that are only available to registered users and another only available to users with special rights. (besides the one that is available to all users. If it is possible, how do I go about achieving this?

Thanks Jan,

Your second option, The one where you link each catagory does just what I need. Great to have a person that stands behind its product and actually is there for you when you need help.

Somewhat related... The current interface for galleries will have a limit I think. I'm just starting think of using Phoca to replace Gallery2. I don't look forward to manually adding all of my photos so if I get time I think I'll look at making an importer. But I question how well it will work because Phoca wants to list all of my photos and if I use the drop down menu I can limit the list to one gallery. Problem is I currently have 239 galleries and over 6000 photos! I don't know what the dropdown menu will look like with 239 entries in it. I'm leaving in June for a 2 month trip through China, Tibet, Viet Nam, Cambodia and Thailand so my 239 galleries will probably grow by another 30 so it's going to get worse.

So ideas for the future?

Thanks,
Grant

I have 6000 photos, can you imagine them all being in a few categories?

Maybe in the listview of all your photos it shows whatever is in the top category which I assume would be a list of other categories. When you click on the category it would then list that category and all categories in it.

It really would be the same as a web based file manager where you browse directories with other directories in it. I teach at the college level and I use Moodle for my learning management system and they have a fairly decent version of this.

In Moodle you have a list of directories and files with a checkbox next to them. Below the list is a drop down menu of operations you can do including, move, delete etc... You can select an item (dir or file) and move it to another location or delete it.

I could see this same sort of thing in Phoca.

In my case I only have about 12 top level categories for various trips I've taken. If you click on one then you have another 10 or so with each one of them only having maybe 5 entries so it would work for me. Of course I'm only one case..

Right, I see. I wasn't sure how much Phoca Gallery relied on Joomla!. I've worked on global projects that got much larger than anyone had every thought and had to answer the question "Why didn't you do this to start with?" and had to answer that I just didn't think of it. I'm not sure the Joomla! folks really thought out the category thing in the beginning but then we're probably trying to get Joomla! to do things that it was never intended to do.

In my opinion Joomla! 1.5 only has a couple of major shortcomings - the category structure and that blasted idea of putting tags in a post to get images to show up are definitely up there. I see both as short sightedness but then that's just the way it is some times.

I'll keep thinking about the interface thing because I know I'd have to have a screen about 2000 pixels high to handle my categories with a drop down menu!

Maybe it can help you to add the next select box next to categories:

Box with categories levels: and if you click on a level (javascript redirect), you get the categories in this level...
