Default File upload permissions

Post by shibumi »

I have set up Public access and a couple of non-public (registered users) categories to separate files.

I have set the appropriate access to folders as such:
Public Category set to Public Access
Staff Category set to Staff Access
Director Category set to Director Access

Public has access to Public categories
Staff Access Level has access to Staff and Public categories
Directors Access Level has access to Directors and Public categories
Managers Access Level has access to Staff, Directors, and Public categories

All uploaded files default to Public Access, even if I upload into category Staff, or category Directors...

How come files that are uploaded into specific categories that have specific access default to Public access, and not the access level corresponding to the category access level?

Any help with this would be appreciated

I don't understand what you exactly mean?

If I am logged into the front end of Joomla, and I upload a file, to a specific category that has special access level other than public, the file access permissions defaults to public access...

If I log into the back end of joomla, and go to the files listing in PhocaDownload, the file access permissions is set to public access, not the access level of the category it was uploaded into... should the file not have the category access permissions it was uploaded into?

So, if I upload a file into the Director Category, that has access level of Director, the file should have access level of Director, but instead it defaults to public access

Hi, yes, the default access rights is set as public. I have added new parameter to Phoca Gallery and will add the same parameter for Phoca Download in next version, where you will be able to set the default access rights of uploaded files.

I think you are missing my point here... if I have a folder (or category) that has special access permissions, if I upload a file to that folder, it should take the special access permissions of that folder (or category)...

So, if I have a category that only Staff usergroup can access, and I upload a file to that category, the file should not be set to public access, it should be set to Staff access only - taking the Category access permissions and setting the file access permissions the same. But I also have a Public usergroup category that Public can access as well. So setting a default upload access permissions for files in the admin wouldn't work - unless you are talking about in the front end upload, having a dropdown select to set file access permissions there??

These are different rights - one for category, second for file - of course to make it work properly, you need to set up both rights the same. But in case you will upload a file to category which has some rights, such file is not accessible - it is protected by category rights, examples:

Category A - access for registered - file A is inside category A - such file is accessible for registered only
Category A - access for public - file A is inside category A - such file is accessible for all
Category A - access for public - file A is inside categery A and has specific access for registered - all files in category are public but the one is for registered.

If you upload a file to category A which is protected by rights, such file is then protected too. Because it is inside protected category. You don't need to set specific rights for files, this option is extra for cases, the category is public and you want to differentiate each files.

Ah, okay, that makes sense... will there be any front end management options other than adding/uploading files? For example, the ability to un-publish, or delete files?

Limited Front end management would be a nice feature especially for clients that don't want, or need, full back end admin access.
