High,
congratulations for the continuous development of this component.
I just updated from 1.6.4 to 1.8 alfa and I have this problem:
* When I select in the frontend any gallery, I am asked to introduce my user name and password.
* After introducing my name and password, the page is re-directed to the start page. After entering again Phoca Gallery, only the message "you are in a private area" is displayed, with the button "logout".
All my categories, subcategories and menu items are set to "published" and "public".
What can I do?

I'm having the same issue after upgrading to 1.8.
The issue can be avoidable if in the main options you select to view unaccessible categories (or something like that).
Unfortunatly my site seems unaccessible (at least by me) since now.

the problem is, I doesn't get this error on my linux, freebsd and xp, so I need the ftp too, (to see the php variable in the code)

I sent you an email with info to log into a test site that is getting the same message. The email gives you info to login with Super-Admin rights. Feel free to check whatever you need.

Second email sent for FTP access. Thought I had FTP access installed on the test site, but apparently I lack. Just gave you normal full FTP access for my account. Just let me know if there is anything else you require.
I believe you have a great product and just hope I can help in anyway at all. I do NOT need a fix for my site, so you can screw with the settings all you want without worry about messing anything up.

Did uninstall and then install of new 1.8.0 and everything fixed on this issue. Good job!
