I think the easiest way is to manually create the thumbs. So let phoca create thumbnails of your pictures and then create manually the numbers (in image form of 100x100 - or whatever you've set as thumb in the global parameters). You rename them like the Medium thumb. Upload the manually created thumbs to your thumbs folder et voila - you got your calendar.
