upload failed

I love the look and feel of this product! I am getting upload failed with a newly installed Joomla v1.5.3 at pennertech dot_com. Everything appears to be writeable.

No, that's what feels so strange. Only the message 'upload failed' with no details appears and you have to really be looking to see that.

I did some reading and it appears others have gotten the same message. One suggestion was to check the directory permissions tab under help > system information > directory permissions and ensure 'writeability' of the directories listed there. Everything there shows 'writable' and I am using Joomla v1.5.3 with the default template right out-of-the-box. Someone else suggested to 'enable FTP', so I went to site > global configuration > server tab, and clicked enable FTP.

When I clicked on the 'save' button I received this:
* JFTP::login: Unable to login
* JFTP::write: Unable to use passive mode
* JFTP::delete: Bad response
* JFTP::write: Unable to use passive mode
Message
* An Error has occurred! Unable to open configuration.php file to write!

OK, so at this point, I used my web providers file manager found in the control panel and via their 'change permissions' mechanism, I add full permissions to the configuration.php file found in the root.
This made no difference.

Now in searching this forum for "passive mode", I came up with this post viewtopic.php?f=1&t=923&p=5311&hilit=passive+mode#p5311 where you suggest "you should look at com_media which is used for uploading (media manager) or controller.php (in Phoca Gallery frontend folder)". This author failed to mention the portion of his error which suggests a problem with the configuration.php as opposed to controller.php. I'll dig as deep as I know how. It sounds like I am getting much closer

I found one controller.php file located in public_html/components/com_phocagallery/controller.php
I tried elevating write permissions in controller.php to reflect user, group as well and still am not able to enable ftp and still get 'upload failed'.

I really appreciate your efforts! Do you have any more suggestions?

Hi, the problem is not in Phoca Gallery, but in installation process, so you must change e.g. tmp folder (there will be zip stored and then unzipped), or components folder...

Oh, I understand. Certainly not 'your fault'. I'm simply trying to resolve the issue. I don't know what to change exactly?

try to set 777 for your root folder, for tmp folder, for components folder:

I'd rather not open the 'root' site that wide. That seems very dangerous from a security perspective. Is there a log I can look at to find out what is happening?

so far tested:
1. docman - OK
2. media manager - OK
3. ftp uploads to those and phoca folders - OK
4. upload via phoca gallery 'upload failed' with no other information given.

??? no idea, so please use others for upload images...
