Default Category on User-Upload form

hi community,
has anyone already done this. i want to programmaticaly set a default category so the users dont have to select the single cat in this pulldown. Many users dont choose one and get the 'choose a category'-message after uploading. this is an unnecessary step in this case. i tried to change the code but without success. so maybe one has already done this.
